Communify Champions enjoy Clovely
On March 17th over 40 interested local residents and business owners joined Communify at Clovely Cellar Door in Red Hill to hear about Communify’s new philanthropic program, Communify Champions.
There was a fantastic energy amongst the guests, many strangers to each other, but sharing a common desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Enjoying a range a beautiful wines from Clovely Estate and nibbling on canapés, groups met and mingled and discussed how best to support local community work.
The formalities of the evening were MCed with aplomb by Communify board member Bea Duffield. CEO Karen Dare gave an overview of Communify’s programs and anticipated the pivotal role Champions would play in Communify’s vision for a just and inclusive society for all.
The Communify Champions program is modelled on the Patrons of New Farm, the philanthropic program attached to the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre. Founding members Debra Fallon and Jennifer Egan spoke on the early development of the group and the milestones they’ve been able to achieve for the disadvantaged in New Farm.
But the highlight of the evening for many were the words from the Champions themselves. Amanda Scott is the owner of Milk café in Ashgrove. Having been witness to the loneliness and difficulties faced by so many community members who visited the café, Amanda and her staff were motivated to make a difference. Milk café signed up to become a Communify Champion and presented a cheque on the night.
Real estate agent Carmen Briggs captivated guests with her recount of working with families selling their homes in the area.
She countered the perception of real estate sales as illustrious upsizes or sea changes, and instead drew attention to the sometimes hidden reasons of family breakdown, domestic violence and loneliness suffered by so many “motivated sellers”. It was this experience that led Carmen and her team to want to make a difference and to become Champions of Communify.
The conversations continued long afterwards in what is hopefully the first of many social events.
In this Communify’s 40th year, the future is looking bright with the Champions on board.
