VOLUNTEERING AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES OVER 6 MILLION AUSTRALIAN VOLUNTEERS

Today there are over 6 million (ABS 2010b) people volunteering annually in Australia, representing 36% of the adult population. Volunteering Australia recognises the valuable contribution each individual provides by offering their time, skills and passion, continuing to demonstrate Australia’s proud culture of giving.

Volunteering Australia is proud to announce the theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week.

“Thanks A Million”

National Volunteer Week runs from 13 – 19 May. During this time we will ask Australians to help us recognise and thank over 6 million Australian Volunteers.

Exceeding National Standards @ Our Childcare Centre

Our long day care centre was recently assessed and rated overall as “Exceeding National Quality Standards” against the National Quality Standards for Early Childhood Education and Care and School Aged Care in March. We are very proud of this achievement for both our early childhood services team and the families that use our centre. Free Health Checks @ The Exchange

This Thursday at the Exchange, the Anglicare Nurses are offering free health checks to all community members (staff, volunteers, clients and activity members). Each check takes about 20 minutes, is non-invasive, and covers all the important checks – blood pressure, diabetes, heart condition – and the nurses will refer you to a bulk-billing doctor near you if a follow-up is needed.

Thursday, 7 March 2013, 12:30pm to 2:30pm at the Exchange, Shop 1, Blamey Street, Kelvin Grove.

Communify @ Grill’d Local Matters!

Great news, everyone! TWO of our programs have been nominated to participate in the Grill’d Local Matters donation scheme at Grill’d Rosalie this month. Knitting English and The Pantry will be two of the jars this month; you’ll have a hard time choosing between the two!

Every month, Grill’d donates $500 to local groups and asks their customers to decide who the money goes to.

When customers buy a burger, they will receive a token (okay, so a Little Creatures bottle cap, but shh!) to put into one of 3 jars representing those community organisations. Whoever has the most tokens at the end of the month receives $300. The other two groups receive $100 each.

To do your bit to help our cause, spread the word and head on down to Grill’d Rosalie located at 19-21 Nash Street, corner of Elizabeth Street, Rosalie.

Award for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding

The eXchange (a Communify Hub at Kelvin Grove) has won an award from the International Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim understanding / University of SA (in partnership with the Australian Award Council of South Australia) for our contribution to Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding in the community.

We are extremely proud of this achievement and look forward to continuing our work with the Muslim community.

“The selection panel was impressed with the active and widespread influence of the eXchange in developing understanding between those who are Muslims and those who are not. I anticipate that this award will bring a more widespread acknowledgement of Muslim culture in Australian communities and that you will continue to positiviely change people’s perceptions.” Professor S Sayyid, Director.
