There will be no surprises for Australia when a federal election is called later this week.

Amongst the 150 lower house seats on offer, the Division of Brisbane stands out as significant. Some commentators claim that the seat makes “Australian political history” with both of the major parties being represented by openly gay candidates.

The evening will be attended by all registered candidates for the Division of Brisbane, including Australian Labor Party candidate Pat O’Neill, Liberal Party candidate Trevor Evans, Greens candidate Kirsten Lovejoy and Veterans Party candidate Bridget Clinch.

The seat encompasses 58 square kilometres north of the Brisbane River from Bardon and Ashgrove in the west, to Stafford in the north, through the CBD, New Farm and east to Hendra and Hamilton.

In this Q&A style event candidates will give a short address to the audience before members of the public will be invited to put their questions to the panel.

The New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, a program of Communify Queensland, has been hosting Politics in the Pub events for 16 years with each event offering a different issue in which all members of the community can engage in, debate and discuss.

The event will be held on Tuesday May 17 at the Brisbane Powerhouse in New Farm from 6-8pm.

All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this free event.
